Where is Turkey?
Modern Turkey was founded in 1923 (when the Ottoman Empire broke apart following World War I) by national hero Mustafa Kemal, who was later honored with the title Ataturk, or "Father of the Turks." Under his authoritarian leadership, the country adopted wide-ranging social, legal, and political reforms. Turkey lies in southeastern Europe and southwestern Asia and shares borders with nine countries. It is slightly larger than the state of Texas in the United States. Turkey joined the UN in 1945 and in 1952 it became a member of NATO. In October 2005, Turkey began time-table talks for joining the European Union. Quick
