Merzifon Summer School Teachers 2005
This outstanding team of teachers has been recruited to offer their services
as ESL instructors at our sister city for three weeks this summer, to
be followed by an idyllic cruise on the Turquoise Coast! (All travel will
be at their own expense.)

Marty Schimbor, Co-Director, Curriculum
Marty Schimbor, our curriculum coordinator, is returning to Merzifon.
Marty teaches English, French, and Spanish. She is a consultant, a
mentor, a Fulbright Scholar, a tour leader to Russia, Spain, and Mexico,
a Teacher of the Year, an expert photographer, etc, etc, etc! |

Jorge Colaizzo, Co-Director, Activities
Jorge Colaizzo came to the US from Peru at age 15. His many job experiences
include ESL teacher, counselor, vice principal, and summer school
principal. He has a BA in filmmaking, and his hobbies include semi-professional
music and soccer. |

Jan Tsuchiya, Anadolu Prep, Grade 9, Ages 14-15
Jan Tsuchiya has a BS in Civil Engineering, an MBA in Finance, and
a MOM (two daughters!). She was an engineer for Chevron. She has nearly
finished her ESL certificate from UC Berkeley, where she is an outstanding
student. |

Richard Hoehnle, Merzifon Prep, Grade 9, Ages 14-15
Richard Hoehnle, Chelsea's father, has 42 years experience as a software
and electrical design engineer. He is a Scout Master, US Navy veteran,
a Certified Flight Instructor, and an avid scuba diver, mountain climber,
camper, sailor, and father of four. |

Gloria Irby, Grades 7-8, Ages 12-13
Gloria taught high school, raised children, was an administrator in
the health field, has earned several ESL certifications, and has just
completed practice teaching at a junior college in Advanced Writing
Improvement for ESL students. |

John Piccone, Grades 7-8, Ages 12-13
John Piccone has a Turkish mother! John received his BA in
music from UC Berkeley, taught English in Poland, has worked in the
field of corporate real estate, plays the piano, and is very interested
in 19th Century Ottoman history |

Jessica Beerbaum, Grades 4-6, Ages 9-11
Jessica Beerbaum, Eric's mother, has worked in bank management
as well as just about every job in an elementary school: classroom
volunteer, office clerk, library coordinator, and instructional assistant.
She is collecting many wonderful books for our summer school! |

Richard Elbrecht, Assistant to Jessica
Richard Elbrecht, Anne's husband, is also a retired attorney.
He has authored numerous publications, traveled widely, done gardening
and home repair, and prepared many exhibits of his photos. Both Richard
and Anne taught in Merzifon last summer. |

Betty Avery, Grades 1-3, Ages 6-8
Betty Avery, a member of last year's teaching team, is a
very hale, hearty, and energetic 85-year-old who refuses to take elevators
where stairs are available! Betty spent many years living and working
in Turkey before retiring in 1986. |

Anne Elbrecht, Assistant to Betty
Anne is a very busy retired attorney, librarian, social worker, and
college instructor. She spent two years with the Peace Corps in Ghana.
She is actively photographing interesting locations and old historical
sites at many places in Turkey. |

Sille Knudsen, Art, Drama, Music
Sille Knudsen is one of our two teachers from Denmark. She is a university
student learning to be a teacher and has had extensive experience
teaching kindergarten and as an au pair. Sille speaks four languages
and loves needlecraft. |

Eric Beerbaum, Art, Drama, Music
Eric is 19. By this summer, he will have completed one year of college
at Evergreen State University. His talents are in cartoon, perspective,
and line drawing, computer game design, creative writing, world history,
film studies, cooking, and music. |
 |
Morten Philipps, Sports and Games
Morten Philipps, our other Danish teacher, plays and sings in a band
and is working on his teaching credential. Morten has held many varied
jobs to help finance his education. He enjoys canoe trips, hiking,
and all outdoor activities. |
 |
Chelsea Hoehnle, Sports and Games
Chelsea is a junior in high school. She is a typical teenager
with lots of friends. She is a good student and an outstanding swimmer.
She has a large music collection, which she would like to share in
Turkey. |
